Friday 24th April 2020

Good morning 5/6 AA, you have made it through three weeks of home schooling.  Make sure you give your parents and older siblings (or anyone else that has been helping you) an extra big thank you hug today.  Give yourselves a big pat on the back as well for being amazing independent learners.  Before you start today's tasks can you please have a look through the reduce the risk booklet below and show it to your parents as well.

Here are your tasks for today:

Maths

Have a go at these questions.  If you are having trouble answering any of them, get your family to help you.

Reading

Read the newspaper articles and then answer the comprehension questions.

Writing

Today you are going to complete your newspaper report. You should have already completed your introduction and your second paragraph.  Now plan and write your third paragraph.  In this section you will go into more detail about where and when.  Once you have written your second paragraph, you will plan and write your conclusion.  In this section you will write about what is happening now and in the future (so pay attention to your tenses).  Use the checklist to make sure that you have included everything that you need to.

Reading

Read the newspaper article on page 1.  Then answer the questions on page 2.  Check your work by looking at the answers on page 3.

Writing

Today you are going to finish writing your newspaper report.  You should have already completed the first page of your planning sheet (you did that on Tuesday).  Now you need to write the introduction.  In about two sentences explain what happened - include who, what, where and when.

Then write another paragraph where you explain in more detail exactly what happened.  Include a quote from an eyewitness - what did someone that saw what happened have to say (use speech marks).

Finally, write your third paragraph.  This is the conclusion and you will explain what will happen next. I have included the planning sheet just in case you need it again.

Whole class

Afternoon work

It has been a stressful time recently.  We don't know how long schools will be closed for or when life will get back to normal.  But there have also been lots of positive things that have happened.  You have got to spend a lot more time with your family and lots of amazing things have been happening around the world because we have been driving and flying a lot less.  Watch this video to see some of these amazing things.

At the moment you are also living through history.  Nothing like this has ever happened during the lifetime of anyone that is alive today.  You will be telling your children and grandchildren about this time.  That's why I want you to do something special this afternoon - I want you to create a time capsule.

This is the dictionary definition of a time capsule - "a container that is filled with objects considered to be typical of the present period in history and then buried, so that it can be dug up and studied much later".  In the file below there are lots of things for you to do and some ideas of what to include in your time capsule.  You could put everything in a large envelope or a box and then store it in a safe place.  Then sometime in the future (how long is up to you), you can open up your time capsule and look at everything in it to remind you of what it was like living through this time.  Have fun creating your time capsule.  Get your whole family involved.
