Tuesday 21st April 2020

Good morning 5/6AA, this week we will be focusing on newspaper reports, so your reading and writing tasks will revolve around that.  As Ramadan begins this week, our afternoon tasks will all be focused on that.  Here are your tasks for today:

Maths

Go to www.whiterosemaths.com - home learning - year 5 - summer term -week 1 - lesson 2 (subtracting decimals within 1).  Watch the video first, then complete the worksheet by clicking on get the activity.  You can check your answers when you have finished.

Reading

Read the Pure Hell newspaper report and then answer the comprehension questions.

Writing

I would like you to write a newspaper report about something positive that has happened during the coronavirus outbreak.  There have been lots of reports of wildlife taking over cities while we have been in lockdown and a princess in Sweden has started volunteering at a hospital in Stockholm.  You could base your newspaper report on one of these stories or you could think of your own.  Before you start planning your newspaper report, I would like you to complete the opening lines worksheet.  Then I would like you to have a look at this website so that you understand the features of a newspaper report.  Once you have done that I would like you to use the Newspaper Planning Report Frame to plan the introduction, the quotes you will use, the sentence openers and connectives that you will use and of course the name of your newspaper and the headline.  I have also included ten top tips for writing a newspaper report that you should read.

Reading

Please read the newspaper article and then answer the questions at the end.

Writing

For the rest of this week you will be writing a newspaper report about something good that has happened in the last few weeks.  You could write about how one man, Captain Tom Moore, has raised millions of pounds for the NHS, or how this postman has been cheering people up by dressing up while he delivers letters, or you could think of your own story to write about.  Before you start, watch this video.  It explains everything you must include in your newspaper report.  Now have a look at the example and then you are ready to start planning your newspaper report.  For today, I would like you to complete the first page of the plan (headline, who is the report about, what is the report about, where did the event happen).
