Art Task:

Today for your art work you are going to be creating a photograph linked to a picture painted by John Everett Millais.

What season does the painting show?

How do you know this?  Are there any other clues in the painting?

This painting is special as it is telling us a story.

What story could the girls be telling you?

What season does the painting show? (Autumn)

How do you know that it is autumn? (There are lots of fallen leaves.)

Are there any other clues in the painting that show us it is autumn? (The little girl is holding an apple, which is an autumnal fruit.)

This painting is special as it is telling us a story.

What story could the girls be telling you? (They are making a bonfire together using leaves.)

Discuss bonfires. Have you ever seen a bonfire? What do you remember about it?

Look again at the painting. Who do you think the girls are in the painting? Could they be sisters? What are they wearing?

In the 19th century, it was common for girls to wear this type of clothing. Talk about the colours in the painting. Are the colours dark or light?

You can go outside into the garden or maybe to the woods and collect some leaves to recreate the painting by putting the leaves in a pile.

Pose for a photograph with your pile of leaves.

Touch the leaves. How do they feel? Look at the colours and shapes of the leaves. Which leaves come from bushes or trees? What detail can you see in the leaves now? Look carefully at the lines. Are there any patterns?

Do you remember making hedgehogs out of Autumn leaves when we were learning all about deciduous and evergreen trees?

Today we would like to to create some different animals using leaves and any other natural objects that you can find.

Here are some ideas:
